On 3 June 1961 Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Vienna. Shortly afterwards, U.S. Air Force One landed at Vienna's Schwechat Airport and John Kennedy disembarked. After the unsuccessful invasion of Cuba, there was much to talk about. Moreover, it was finally time for Kennedy to get to know his famous antagonist personally. This summit, followed closely by the curious Viennese and vigorously acclaimed at every opportunity, established Vienna's reputation as a city for high-ranking international conferences once and for all.
